Muhammad Akbar II (1806-1837) – Silver Nazarana Rupee, Specially Struck, Dar al-Khilafah Shahjahanabad mint, AH1225/RY4. Obv: Farsi legend Sikka Mubarak Sahib Qiran Thani Muhammad Akbar Badshah Ghazi; umbrella and cinquefoil symbols. Rev: mint-name and RY in ‘Julus’ formula. By 1810, when this coin was struck, the authority of the Mughal emperor was only nominal and the real power rested in the hands of the East India Company. However, the mint in Shahjahanabad was kept operational, mainly to produce coins for ceremonial purposes, such as when the British Resident paid official visit to the king three or four times a year. This coin is evidently struck for such a purpose, judging by its wide size and by its milled edge. Milling was introduced by the Company on its mechanically produced coinage in Bengal and must have been considered as an unusual feature. It cannot be ascertained if this milled edge is a result of a mechanical device or is applied by hand. However, it is undoubtedly a highly unusual feature. There is no other specimen known with Milled edge, Extra Fine+, Exceedingly Rare, Unique Specimen.
