The Republic of Maldives, Gold Islamic Centre Commemorative Coin, 100 Rufiyaa Gold Proof, 28.40mm, 15.98 grams, (purity.916), Mintage 100 nos, Minted at Royal mint, 1984AD/AH1405. Issued to celebrate the opening of a new mosque and Islamic centre (officially named Masjid-al-Sultan Muhammad Thakurufaanu Al Auzam) it is an architectural landmark in Malé, Maldives opened in November 1984 by President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, The Grand Friday Mosque located in the Centre is named after one of the most celebrated Maldivian heroes, Sultan Muhammad Thakurufaanu Al Auzam of the Maldives. The mosque is the largest in the Maldives, and also one of the largest in South Asia, admitting over 5,000 people.The Centre also houses the Ministry of Islamic Affairs from 11 November 2008 onwards, which replaced the Supreme Council of Islamic Affairs.Obv. Depiction of the Emblem of the Republic of the Maldives with the word "Maldives" written beneath in both English and Dhivehi. The denominational value appears on the left in English and on the right in Dhivehi. Rev. Designed by Robert Elderton, features the new mosque and Islamic centre with the inscription "Official Opening of Grand Mosque and Islamic Centre" in English, and Dhivehi. The date " 11th November 1984" also appears in both languages.
