Vijayanagara Empire, Copper jital, Devaraya II (1423-1446 AD), Ganesh KC9.64 var., 3.40 grams, obv. elephant charging to the right holding a weapon in his raised trunk, chasing a foot soldier; Nagari letter ?De? above. Rev. Nandi-nagari legend Raya / Gaja Ganda / bherunda in three lines. A remarkable depiction of a war elephant, for which the Vijayanagara army was famous, and a tribute to the love of elephants harbored by the king. Very fine, Rare.
